To add a formula to a sheet, you should enter it in a cell. Each formula starts with an equal sign.

To enter a formula, type the equal sign, and then the formula itself. To finish a formula entry, click the roller wheel or press the ENTER button.

In the picture on the left you can see a sheet with a formula entered in C6 cell. Here, formula subtracts the minimal value of the set of cells C1 - C5.

eCell uses different operators in formulas. Here is the list of operators identified by the program:

  • + - addition;
  • - - subtraction;
  • * - multiplication;
  • / - division;
  • ^ - exponentiation;
  • & - concatenation;
  • = - comparison operator "Equal to";
  • > - comparison operator "Greater than";
  • < - comparison operator "Less than";
  • >= - comparison operator "Greater than or equal to";
  • <= - comparison operator "Less than or equal to";
  • <> - comparison operator "Not equal to".

You can also use round brackets in formulas to indicate the order of calculations.

Formulas can obtain links to cells from other sheets. To operate with such links, eCell™ employs a special entry type: ‘Name_of_the_Sheet’!Address_of_the_Cell.

If you enter the formula to a cell with a link to itself, the calculations will never end. In this case, the program will display #Cross in a cell.

In eCell, there are many built-in functions for executing additional operations, such as SUM, AVERAGE and SQRT functions, and some multipurpose functions, i.e. statistical or logical functions. All functions begin with an opening parenthesis, followed by a closing parenthesis. Functions differ by their arguments:

  • functions without arguments;
  • functions with one argument;
  • functions with a fixed number of arguments;
  • functions with non-fixed number of arguments;
  • functions with optional arguments.

If there are one or more arguments in the function, each argument is separated by comma.

To insert a function in a cell, place the cursor in the cell and select Insert?Function. Function categories are listed on the right, while an alphabetical list of functions within the selected category are on the left. Select the function, and then select “OK”. The function name will be added to the eCell main window edit bar. To select arguments, use the keyboard to enter arguments in the cell data area right in the sheet. When a row of arguments is formed, select the “OK” button to add a function to the cell.
