eSpell allows user to check the spelling of outgoing e-mails. To start spell checking, the user needs to compose an e-mail, click the wheel and select “Check Spelling” from the menu that will appear, as shown on Fig. 1.

The application then launches and shows the text of the e-mail in the Spell Check window. The progress bar indicates the progress of search for misspelled words and suggestions on how to replace them. The user sees the screen as shown on Fig. 2.

Note: when the spell check is run for the first time, prior to the actual search for incorrect spelling, eSpell prompts the user to select a dictionary and change spelling options. For details on how to change dictionaries and options, see Section 8 of this document. After initial setup of eSpell, the program builds and initializes the dictionaries and indices. During this process, the user sees the screen shown on Fig. 3.

When the search in the dictionary is complete, the first misspelled word is highlighted and the user is prompted to act on it. Several possible options exist as following: change the word to the correctly spelled one; ignore the misspelled word; edit the word; and add the word to the user’s word list. The details of the options and potential user actions are described in details in the next section. The general look of the suggestions pop-up is shown in Fig. 4.

After the user goes through all the misspelled words, the “Spelling Complete” dialog is displayed as shown in Fig. 5.

The user clicks OK and then has an option to repeat the spell checking process or save the results of the spell check into the e-mail by selecting the “Save Message and Close” button. Once back to the e-mail composer, the user needs to click on the wheel again and select “Send” to send the e-mail. It is also possible to edit the e-mail again prior to sending it. The user also has an option to perform additional spell check on the entire e-mail.

Note: at any point during the process of checking the spelling, the user can interrupt the process by clicking the wheel on the misspelled word, and moving the cursor to the Exit button and clicking the wheel, as seen in Fig. 7. The cursor returns the spelled text and the user then has an option to repeat the spell checking process or save the results of the spell check into the e-mail by selecting “Save Message and Close” button. The user can also cancel the spell checking process.
