There can be any number of sheets in the eCell workbook. Every sheet consists of cells, and every cell may consist of the following data types:

  • numbers
  • text
  • formula

Numeric values, or numbers, show quantitative relations between data of a certain kind, for example, sales volume, number of employees, atomic weight, etc. Numbers in cells is used in formulas and diagrams. Numbers can also contain date and time.

Besides numbers, you can edit text in sheets. As a rule, text is used for entering numbers, column labels and some relevant information about tables.

In eCell, you can enter complex formulas employing both numbers and text. If you enter a formula in a cell, the calculated result will be displayed in the same cell. If you change any of the numbers in a formula, eCell will automatically make new calculations and display new result.

To enter new data in cells, place the cursor in the cell you want to edit, enter the appropriate symbols, and select the “OK” button (to the left of formula string) to confirm the new entry, or click the roller wheel. If you enter text in a cell that exceeds the current width of a column, eCell will display the whole text using the neighboring cells. If neighboring cells are not empty, the program will display the maximum number of symbols that fit in the display size of the cell and the cell data area will show the data in full.

Formatting data in cells includes font formatting, data alignment and number formatting. To change the cell formatting select the cell or cells you need to re-format, and either select the appropriate toolbar button or go to Format?Cells to invoke the formatting dialog (pictured at left).

By default, text in cells is aligned to the left. Numbers, on the contrary, are aligned to the right of a cell. Change the alignment with the toolbar buttons or with the alignment radio buttons of the formatting dialog.

You can also make data in the cells bold, italic or underlined using the formatting dialog or toolbar buttons.

Note: on Blackberry devices with OS versions of 3.2 and 3.3 it is not possible to combine multiple font formatting – the font manager ignores such formatting and displays data as if no formatting was applied.

Numbers in eCell can be formatted only through the formatting dialog. Here is the list of number format categories with explanations:

  • General. General number formatting - this is the default format. Numeric values are displayed as whole numbers, decimal fractions or numbers in exponential format (if numbers are too big or exceed the cell size).
  • Date. Here you can switch between 28 date formats.
  • Time. Here you can switch between 4 time formats.
  • Date&Time. Here you can switch between 8 date & time formats.
  • Number. Here you can change number formatting.
  • Currency. Here you can select currency formatting.
  • Percentage. This category adds % symbol to numbers.

In the formatting dialog click “OK” once you have selected all required formatting options.
